I was contacted my Lord and Miller Productions in early 2020 to help visualize the look of Rocky's ship for Andy Weir's latest novel "Project Hail Mary". I was incredibly excited to work on this because I loved 'The Martian' and this is exactly the kind of thing I've always done in my head when I read science fiction; a life long passion of mine.
It was quite a challenge to design an alien ship, it inherently does not look like anything we have seen before, and because of that there was a lot of back and forth between my interpretation and the production team's vision based on what they knew about some of the experiences in the thematic moments they wanted to hit. Visualizing such an intricate and and unique ship took a lot of creativity and critical thinking.
I reread the descriptions of the ship recently and I cannot wait to see this in theaters! I hope you enjoy seeing the process I created.
